FEATURE EXPANDED 1st edition

The six month Feature Expanded programme combines:

  • A week intensive residential at HOME in Manchester that mixes masterclasses, case studies, workshops, networking opportunities and screenings alongside individual tutorials and group work
  • Online tutorials with the Feature Expanded experts
  • A four day residential at Lo Schermo Dell’Arte Film Festival in Florence to attend the festival and continue tutorials before pitching films to a jury and a selected group of industry professionals
  • Feature Expanded Distribution Award: One of the 12 film projects is selected for the FEx Distribution Award. The award provides one of the film projects with a theatrical distribution in the UK and Ireland by HOME Artist Film and in Italy by Lo schermo dell’arte

Each of the twelve participants is assigned an experienced producer as a tutor who will work with them in developing their Film project throughout the Programme both on a one-to-one basis and in groups of four artists.

CASE STUDIES

Khalil Joreige // Lebanese Rocket Society
One half of artist-filmmaker duo Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige, based in Beirut and Paris, Joreige will discuss their process of directing and producing feature films and explain the making of Lebanese Rocket Society as a case study.

Nadia Turincev // A Spell To Ward Off The Darkness
Producer Nadia Turincev (France) details the process of developing and producing the feature film A Spell To Ward Off The Darkness, directed by Ben Russell and Ben Rivers, exhibited at over 50 festivals internationally.

Lisa Marie Russo & Andrew Kötting // Swandown
Producer Lisa Marie Russo & director Andrew Kötting discuss the experience and challenges of developing Swandown.

Renée van der Grinten & Floor Onrust // Public Funding
Explore working with public funding and creating European coproductions through case studies provided by two experienced speakers: Renée van der Grinten, Consultant, Experimental Film & Documentary at Netherlands Filmfund, and producer Floor Onrust (Family Affair Films). Renée will talk about ‘De Verbeelding/The Imagination’, a bi-annual scheme that provides grants for feature films exploring the boundaries between art and film. Floor will share her experiences with financing and producing History’s Future, the debut feature by artist Fiona Tan, and the Verbeelding-film she is currently producing.

WORKSHOPS
Script & non-script development
Marietta Von Hausswolff von Baumgarten (Sweden) will lead an advanced level workshop on developing feature projects with or without scripts, and how to best use existing industry formats for presenting projects to potential partners and funders.

Working with Actors
Sam Rumbelow has over 30 years industry experience as an actor and method coach, and collaborated with Gillian Wearing on her first feature film Self Made. This workshop will cover advanced skills for directing and working with actors, both professional and non-professional.

Exhibition models and audience development
A practical workshop by Jason Wood and Sarah Mosses (CEO, TogetherFilms) looking at how films are marketed, audience reception and how to build this into the development and production process of a feature film.

ROUNDTABLES
New Production Models
A roundtable of emerging and experienced film producers exploring the diversity of current models for feature film production including changes in technologies, cross-art form projects, scale of budgets and future predictions for the industry.

Audience Development & Exhibition Models for Artists’ Films
This roundtable considers the future of exhibition for feature films for audiences, filmmakers, distribution and exhibition including new technologies, changes in audience reception and diverging forms of exhibition including television the internet.

MASTERCLASSES
Film Distribution
Jason Wood (HOME Artistic Director: Film) and James King (Theatrical Sales Manager, Artificial Eye) lead a masterclass on theatrical feature film distribution including how distributors select films and release timescales.

Getting your film to an audience: the role of the sales agent and guide to distribution agreements
Explore the role of sales agents, how they are appointed and the key attributes you should look for in a good distribution deal with Simon Osborn, Head of Business and Legal Affairs for Protagonist Pictures.

FINAL PITCH
The participants pitch their films in a 10 min. session to a jury of industry professionals including Sarah Perks (HOME / Course Director), Leonardo Bigazzi (Curator, Lo schermo dell’arte / Course Director), Lukasz Ronduda (Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw) and Lisa Marie Russo (Producer, Fly Film). The event will also be open to key funders and industry figures attending the festival. The jury will decide on the winning pitch. The winner will receive further development support from Feature Expanded including a distribution deal in the UK and Italy.
