Given the high quality of the film projects, this year and since the jury members were impressed by two very different types of film projects have been assigned two Feature Expanded Distribution Award.

FEATURE EXPANDED 2nd edition

22 – 27 June 2016, HOME, Manchester

The six month Feature Expanded programme combines:

  • A week intensive residential at HOME in Manchester that mixes masterclasses, case studies, workshops, networking opportunities and screenings alongside individual tutorials and group work
  • Online tutorials with the Feature Expanded experts
  • A four day residential at Lo schermo dell’arte Film Festival in Florence to attend the festival and continue tutorials before pitching films to a jury and a selected group of industry professionals
  • Feature Expanded Distribution Award: One of the 12 film projects is selected for the FEx Distribution Award. The award provides one of the film projects with a theatrical distribution in the UK and Ireland by HOME Artist Film and in Italy by Lo schermo dell’arte.
  • Feature Expanded Development Award. The award provides one participant with a 4 day intensive residency in Stockholm to work with script consultant Marietta von Hausswolff von Baumgarten on the script development of his/hers film project.
  • Ottod’Ame Film Award


Each of the twelve participants is assigned an experienced producer as a tutor who will work with them in developing their Film project throughout the Programme both on a one-to-one basis and in groups of four artists.

CASE STUDIES

Omer Fast // Remainder
Natasha Dack Ojumu, of TigerLily films, and producer of Omer Fast’s first feature film Remainder, adapted from Tom McCarthy’s best-selling book, covers the journey of the production of this film.   

Fiona Tan // History’s Future
Floor Onrust of Family Affair Films, and the producer of Fiona Tan’s first feature History’s Future (2015), presents the full story of the film, from production to distribution.

Andrew Kötting // Swandown
Producer Lisa Marie Russo & director Andrew Kötting discuss the experience and challenges of developing Swandown.

WORKSHOPS

Script & non-script development
Marietta Von Hausswolff von Baumgarten  will lead an advanced level workshop on developing feature projects with or without scripts, and how to best use existing industry formats for presenting projects to potential partners and funders.

Working with Actors
Sam Rumbelow has over 30 years industry experience as an actor and method coach, and collaborated with Gillian Wearing on her first feature film Self Made. This workshop will cover advanced skills for directing and working with actors, both professional and non-professional.

Pitching your film
Pitching expert Sibylle Kurz will lead a group seminar and one to one sessions with the participants.

MASTERCLASSES

Getting your film to an audience: sales agents, marketing & distribution
Jason Wood introduces European film distribution including: a discussion on how distribution and exhibition works with James King, (Theatrical Sales Manager Curzon Artificial Eye) the role of the sales agent and a guide to distribution agreements. Explore the role of sales agents, how they are appointed and the key attributes you should look for in a good distribution deal with Simon Osborn, Head of Business and Legal Affairs for Protagonist Pictures.

Industry and European markets
Rebecca De Pas introduces film markets and delivers a practical seminar on how to prepare and present a film project to possible partners/producers in the context of co-production markets.

Getting your film to an audience
a practical workshop with Sarah Mosses (CEO, TogetherFilms) looking at how films are marketed, audience reception and how to build this into the development and production process of a feature film.

ROUNDTABLES

Money Talks: European public funding for film (Manchester)
Moderated by Professor Sarah Perks, Artistic Director: Visual Art for HOME and a film producer, this roundtable explores the current situation of public funding for feature film in Europe, with a special focus on artist film and new opportunities across the sector. Guests include Producer & Curator Jacqui Davies Zorana Piggott (Producer, 011 Productions), Pavel Strnad (Produce/Co-Founder, Negativ) and Ronan Girre (Chief Executive & Head of Studies, Ateliers du Cinéma Européen)

Museum and Artists’ Feature Films Distribution and Exhibition (Florence)
The roundtable explores new possibilities offered by non-theatrical distribution and the role of museums in the exhibition of artist feature films. Guests include: Joana Hadjithomas (artist), Jaap Guldemond (Director of Exhibitions EYE Film Museum Amsterdam), Tobias Pausinger (co- founder Art:Film and Media Consultant). Moderated by Leonardo Bigazzi, curator of Lo schermo dell’arte Film Festival.

FINAL PITCH

The participants pitch their films in a 10min session to a jury of industry professionals and producers as Laura Israel (Filmaker), Elisa Larrier (Producer), Leonardo Bigazzi and Sarah Perks. The event will also be open to key funders and industry figures invited for this occasion, among them: Erika Balsom, Rebecca De Pas, Tobias Pausinger, Marietta von Hausswolff von Baumgarten. The jury will decide the winners of the Feature Expanded Distribution Award, Feature Expanded Development Award and ottod’Ame Film Award.
